顔写真 (mug shot)

先日紹介した「陰の季節」は犯罪もの小説だったので、その連想で、mug shot という言葉を取り上げてみたい。「顔写真」という意味だが、しばしば警察が撮っておく犯罪者の写真を指す。ミステリを原書で読む人にはおなじみの単語なのだろうが、私は初めて知ったとき、面白い言い方をするものだな、と思った。
- a photograph of usually a person's head and especially face; specifically : a police photograph of a suspect's face or profile

- noun Slang. 1. an identifying photograph of a suspect or criminal, often one of a set showing a frontal view, a profile view, and a view of the back of the head. 2. any closeup photograph of one's face.
mug は「マグカップ」でおなじみだが、そのほかに人間の「顔」を意味するわけである。なぜそうなるのか、Online Etymology Dictionary をのぞいてみた。mug (n.1) とあるのは、"drinking vessel" としてのこの単語について説明している項目のこと。
mug (n.2)
"a person's face," 1708, possibly from mug (n.1), on notion of drinking mugs shaped like grotesque faces. Sense of "portrait or photograph in police records (e.g. mug shot, 1950) had emerged by 1887. Verb sense of "make exaggerated facial expressions" is from 1855, originally theatrical slang.
私は、取っ手を耳に見立ててのことかと想像していたが、違ったようだ。 mug と犯罪といえば、mugging を連想する人も多いだろう。「強盗」 (a quick violent robbery of a person, usually in a public place) ということだが、調べてみたら、由来は上記の mug と関係があるようだ。動詞の mug について同じオンライン辞書を見ると、
mug (v.)
"to beat up," 1818, originally "to strike the face" (in pugilism), from mug (n.2). The general meaning "attack" is first attested 1846, and "attack to rob" is from 1864 (mugger in this sense is from 1865). Perhaps influenced by thieves' slang mug "dupe, fool, sucker" (1851).
とあった。 もう少し詳しい説明が下記にある。 http://www.word-detective.com/121597.html 一方、Wikipedia を見ると、mug shot の由来については異説もあるようだ。長くなるので引用はしないが、興味のある方はご覧いただきたい。 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mug_shot Wikipedia を読んでいてむしろへえっと思ったのは、次の文だ。
It was invented by Allan Pinkerton, a famous US detective of the 19th Century. Most mug shots are two-part, with one side-view photo, and one front-view. The Pinkerton National Detective Agency first began using these on "Wanted" posters from the "Wild West" days.
- Ed Smart was determined to follow this lead and members of the family worked with an artist and came up with a sketch of "Emmanuel".

- Back in Salt Lake City, the Smart family and police developed three composite sketches of Emmanuel based on the family's memories of the homeless preacher who worked on their house.
